Forest-Garden

Updated: Dec 28, 2021

For many years, my brother and I have been working on the family property to preserve and enhance the existing ecosystems and crops with an important touch of landscaping.

Our goal is that these ecosystems and cultures are healthy, stable, resilient, and that humans and animals alike can benefit from their resources in an intelligent way.

It is a loop where each element feeds the others, without producing waste to be eliminated. We are moving towards the concept of the forest-garden, a system that allows the land to bear fruit by rediscovering a way of life that has existed since the beginning of time.

The forest garden has three levels of vegetation, the upper level composed of trees and fruit trees : chestnut, walnut, beech, oak, apple, pear, cherry, etc. The middle level is composed of shrubs such as hazelnut, dogwood, raspberry, etc. Then there is the soil and its many species of aromatic and medicinal plants, wild vegetables, mushrooms, etc.

The majority of the plants we find on the property are wild plants. Others have been grafted but with local species. The products of the forest garden have a higher content of proteins, vitamins and minerals than products from intensive selections. Moreover, many of these products can be eaten raw, which is an advantage in relation to the energy expenditure of cooking.

Growing a forest garden is a way to keep the planet healthy while providing us with food and other invaluable benefits.
